"On Christian Liberty and The Prince, produced by sixteenth century thinkers Martin Luther and Niccolo Machiavelli respectively, both contain humanist insights that have laid foundations for modern thought. Writing in response to the prolonged foreign invasions on Italy and the chaotic religious circumstances of Europe during the Renaissance, both Machiavelli and Luther constructed original theories on the topics of human nature, authority, and the church. While they differed sharply in how they approached and developed conclusions to these basic issues, they both showed influences of Renaissance humanism and modernity in their ideas. Machiavelli and Martin Luther were alike in their application of humanist thought into their works which led to similar modern ideas on the basic principles of human nature, authority, and the church."
