"Carver was born in the mill town of Clatskanie, Oregon, in 1938, as the U.S. was struggling to recover from the Dust Bowl and Great Depression. His alcoholic father, who had earlier rode the rails from Arkansas to Washington, was employed as a sawmill worker. His mother, Ella Casey Carver, who suffered as a victim of domestic violence, supplemented the family income by working as a waitress and retail clerk. Carver's 1986 poem "Shiftless" summarizes the story of his childhood times: "The people who were better off than us were comfortable . . . . / The ones worse off were sorry and didn't work (Carver167)."
