"The purpose of this research is to examine racial inequality in America through a comparative and historical perspective. The plan of the research will be to set forth the context in which analysis of the issue can most usefully be considered, and then discuss the experience of blacks, Native Americans, Chicanos, and Asians from the nineteenth century to the mid-twentieth century.


The history of racial inequality in America is above all a history of moral division and physical separation. While, as we shall see, this may be less true of the modern period than it was in the 19th century, the fact that the subject of race and culture is a matter of such vigorous debate in the country makes the point that the residue of division within a well-defined social structure remains strong.
