"Paramount can serve as an example of the way the majors are situated today. Paramount Communications, formerly known as Gulf+Western, has experienced the same problems as other entertainment-based companies in recent years as the recession reduced revenues and as costs rose. However, Paramount has had particular problems in certain of its divisions, notably the publishing unit, and is only now beginning to recover through a program of cost-cutting as well as because of a number of successes in film and television product. With the death of Charles Bluhdorn, Martin Davis became chairman and instituted a number of changes. He had a vision of an entertainment company and divested the corporation of many non-entertainment holdings.
