Comparison Essay # 116793 :: Operating Systems
A comparison of network operating systems, including Microsoft XP, Linux, Apple's Mac and IBM.
Written in 2009; 2,857 words; 10 sources; APA; $ 84.95
Paper Summary:
This paper provides an assessment of operating systems that addresses relative consumer costs, maintenance, ease of use, purpose and special applications of each operating system. The paper discusses Microsoft's XP system that set the standard for tasking efficiency, but has fallen behind competitively because of the many bugs and user unfriendliness of its latest innovation of Vista. The paper notes the weaknesses in Linux but relates that it is working to catch up to Windows during this lull in Microsoft OS product development. The paper relates that IBM has an old code for an OS, rendering it functionally obsolete, while Apple's Mac has an OS that is too slow and graphics based for the average non-graphics oriented user. Finally, the paper looks at the relative unknown Novel system that seems to offer both innovation and expanded user capability, and is the most empowering new version of OS.
From the Paper:
"Linux is another OS that is generally considered not so viable as a competitor, as its user friendliness and compatibility is limited. The user friendliness is limited due to the relative lack of confidentiality, and applicability of the operating system over a wide range of mainframes. The newest version of Linux, the Linux Ultima, is considered not compatible with desktop computers. Drawbacks of Linux listed by research include the fact that the drivers are hard to set up, and often omit Flash, which is a common video driver for most operating systems today, the development of software for Linux is characterized as "painful," Linux does not provide good support for Wi-Fi, meaning than anyone with a Linux Operating system may not be able to access wireless internet access, which is a veritable staple for any computer system and user today; many 3D graphics and fonts are omitted from the Linux system, and print drivers, other hardware and OS software for Linux in general is very hard to come by."
