Paper Summary:
This essay explores the similarities between the characters and worlds of Chinua Achebe's "Okonkwo" and Shakespeare's "Hamlet". Although 400 years apart, the author comments on the likeness of political atmosphere, paternal relationships, the coming to power and the violence in each of their surroundings. As well as outlining both of these stories the author analyzes the characters and their personal flaws.
From the paper:
On of the most striking things about his novel Things Fall Apart is that Achebe does not paint a portrait of pre-colonial Nigeria as a paradise. Perhaps because we are used to reading accounts of how European colonization was the equivalent of cultural (and sometimes biological as well) genocide in terms of its impact on native peoples, we expect to read stories in which European colonization has to be bad for the natives. We may also connect European presence in African to slavery, and so see any European political maneuvering in Africa as necessarily contributing to a decline in the quality of the lives of those who had come before."
