This paper discusses and compares two texts that were written roughly around the same time period; the Bible and Homer's "Iliad". The paper first examines the book of Genesis and how the story of Adam and Eve imparts the theme that humans should be fearfully obedient to God. The paper then examines the Iliad, which propounds the idea that disobedience can be condoned.
From the Paper:
"The book of Genesis tells the story of how God created the Earth and Heaven in six days, resting on the seventh. He gave all of his creations to a man that he called Adam and his female helper called Eve. They were meant to rule over the land and every living thing with only one restriction and one primary duty. Their duty was to reproduce and populate the planet. The restriction was to refrain from eating the fruit of the Tree of Knowledge of good and evil. If they ate from this tree, disobeying God after He had provided them with all of their necessities, and had given them the gift of life, they were warned that they would die. Therefore, God has created man to be fearfully obedient; whereas the Iliad expresses specific reasons for admiration of humans."
