↶ Look Inside

Paper Summary:

A comparison of the lives of African-Americans during the early 20th Century which was influenced by their geographical location - North vs. South. The writer claims that even though they were very different lives, it does not mean that one was better than the other. The writer analyzes professional opportunities, cultural opportunities and social settings when doing the comparison.

From the Paper:

"The lives of African-Americans varied considerably in the North and the South during the early 20th century. This is true from a legal perspective, a cultural perspective, and a personal perspective (i.e. from the psychological viewpoint of the blacks and whites dwelling in these two regions.) But because the lives of African-Americans in the North and South were different does not mean that one sort of lifestyle and set of constraints was better or worse than then the other. This paper will not take the position that the North was good and the South was bad. This is true even though the North had been the site of freedom from slavery for blacks throughout the antebellum period."
