Comparison Essay # 116622 :: Nietzsche and Spinoza on Human Morality
This paper explores Friedrich Nietzsche and Baroch Spinoza's theories of human morality in their respective works "The Genealogy of Morals" and "Ethics".
Written in 2009; 1,764 words; 0 sources; $ 56.95
Paper Summary:
The paper first explains Nietzsche's argument that our morals are constructs of the times in order to prevent others from having control over us. The paper then discusses how Spinoza believes that our morals are a result of the knowledge that we have of pain and pleasure, and this stems from God's virtues. The paper therefore shows how these two works give the groundwork for morality in human beings, but they do so in different manners.
From the Paper:
"The philosophical works The Genealogy of Morals, by Friedrich Nietzsche, and Ethics, by Baroch Spinoza, provide the reader with differing opinions on what human morality means. Nietzsche takes God out of the equation completely by saying that the concepts of good and evil have changed with the times throughout history and they will continue to do so as society changes. Nietzsche, therefore, makes the argument that our morals are constructs of the times in which we will and have evolved much as human beings have over the ages, but that this is not necessarily a good thing because it is meant as a manner of preventing others from having control over us."
