Maya Angelou and Frederick Douglass

Maya Angelou and Frederick Douglass
A compare and contrast between two of America's most well-known African-American thinkers and writers, Maya Angelou and Frederick Douglass.
2,095 words (approx. 8.4 pages) | 14 sources | APA | 2006 United States

Paper Summary:

This paper compares and contrasts the bodies of work of two prominent African-Americans: Frederick Douglass, an abolitionist during the latter half of the 19th century, and Maya Angleou, one of the most prolific American poets and authors of modern times. The author examines the impact of Douglass' and Angelou's families, life experiences and patronage from influential figures on their philosophies, body of work and success.

From the Paper:

"There is still a lot of talk about "Negroes" being inferior. They have to work twice as hard to get ahead. As writers, they have to be twice as good to be noticed. Both Maya Angelou and Frederick Douglass overcame this notion of inferiority. It was not easy then, and it is not easy now. Ralph Ellison wrote: "I am invisible, understand, simply because people refuse to see me..." Today, many Afro-Americans are still invisible. Even in poetry and other writing, there is shouting in the pages. What do these two people have in common? For one thing, the use of words."
