This paper draws comparisons between the lives and impact of Thomas Jefferson and Marcus Garvey. Both mens' lives are described, showing the similarities of their family background, education, personal lives and achievements. The author also comments on the great charisma and eloquence of both leaders and how they inspired their followers to action. Jefferson and Garvey are also cited for fighting for the rights of the common man, both taking risks against their personal reputations and financial stability for ethical goals. The paper concludes by stating that few individuals have the lasting influence both of these men had on their races and nations.

"Both Jefferson and Garvey, then were tremendously hardworking and ambitious, even during hard times. Although Jefferson had not met with such serious setbacks as early in life as Garvey had, he did lose much that was important to him. He and his sister, Jane, were very close, and her death struck him hard - perhaps harder than the death of Garvey's mother hit her son. Soon after Jane's death, Jefferson's home and library, along with all his papers caught on fire and was destroyed. This grieved him very much, yet he pressed on and began the restoration of his library not long after."
