Few works published today are understanding or sympathetic to the institution, just as many sought to vindicate it at the beginning of the century. Throughout this transition in which the outcome of the Civil War has coalesced in the minds of most as a successful carriage of justice and liberation, various writers have tried to make light of the legacy of slavery in America. Their perspectives are as dissimilar as those one could expect from a divorce trial."
