This paper examines the differences between leadership and power as it applies to nursing management and explains why it is so important to understand the differences between power, leadership, and management.

"Power could be viewed as influence over the attitudes and behaviors of people or as influence over events (Scheeder, 1998). There are seven types of power used within organization (Sullivan & Decker, 2005). Of these seven types, a nurse could use all types of power during interactions with non-nursing units. Nurse Managers also have punishment power in the form of incident reports, suspensions, and even firing if the nurse or para-professional under them is negligent or insubordinate. Legitimate power used by nurse mangers to obtain additional staffing by influencing an organization to increase budget, or increase nurse to patient ratios to improve patient care and outcomes for appropriate levels of care at the facility. Nurse Managers when they need to reward a job well done use reward power. When nurses work in the role of managers, charge, or coordinator they can offer reward power to compete an organizational task. The additional types of power are personal bases of power and used between individuals."
