However, the practical exercise of the Jewish religions finds its expression in the adherence to the Law. This law is the way to live in order to please God, who in the Old Testament is wrathful and willing to inflict horrible punishment. This is a necessary trait, considering the necessity of adhering to the rules, as fear is a proven and effective instrument of coercion, apparently not unknown to God."
