Comparison Essay # 116968 :: Japanese Americans and the Lumbee Indians
This essay is a comparative book review of Valerie J. Matsumoto's "Farming the Home Place" and Karen I. Blu's "Where Do You Stay At,"
Written in 2008; 1,461 words; 2 sources; MLA; $ 48.95
Paper Summary:
This paper examines "Farming the Home Place," which documents three generations of Japanese immigrants in America, and "Where Do You Stay At," which studies the Lambee Indian tribe in North Carolina. The paper discusses how both authors utilize interviews in their respective books, which convey the groups' ideas of community and their roles in it. The paper then gives a detailed synopsis of each book's content.
From the Paper:
"However, there are also numerous differences between the two groups as well. The Lumbees were not the only people living on their lands and had to share it with other races. The Lumbees did not have reservations therefore did not own their own lands. The Japanese lived in a rural community while the Lumbees lived in an urban community. The Lumbee Indians also succumbed to outside influences of the other people native to Robeson County. Nevertheless, the idea of community was still the same for both the Japanese and the Lumbees. It was essential that both groups kept the same family bonds, shared ethnicity, land attachment, and willingness to succeed when faced with extreme adversity, in order to maintain place and community."
