The paper introduces, discusses and analyzes the topic of the Middle East. Specifically it compares and contrasts the rise of the Ottoman and Egyptian nationalist movements of the nineteenth or early twentieth century. The paper notes that nationalist movements grew all over the Middle East during this time, and two of the most prominent were the Egyptian and Ottoman nationalist movements.

"The major differences between these two movements is their success rate, and their motivation. The Egyptian movements was spawned largely because of imperialism and the economy, while the Ottoman movement was spurred by a despotic leader and oppression and discontent throughout the country. It took many years for both of the movements to actually see success, and Egypt's movement seemed to be more effective, in the long run, than the Ottoman movement. It was not until after World War I that most movements actually saw success, and the Ottoman Empire, if in a more democratic form, lasted through World War II, when it sided with the Nazis and Italy, and was dissolved after the war ended."
