From the Paper:

"John Gardner's 1971 novel, Grendel, serves to provide an alternate viewpoint to the famous epic poem, Beowulf. Through the descriptions of Grendel, Gardner is able to change the reader's opinion of the monster, Grendel. This book presents the motivation for Grendel when he mercilessly attacks the humans by retelling the most important moments of his life. From these stories, my opinion of Grendel has changed significantly from my feelings based solely on the epic poem, Beowulf."
