This paper compares the films "Metropolis" (1927) and "Blade Runner" (1982) and discusses the use of expressionism and narrative strategy in both films. This paper also examines how characters in both films are utilized to convey ideas and themes.
From the Paper:
"Fritz Lang's 1928 film Metropolis is arguably the most important science-fiction genre film to come out in the early period of filmaking (though a convincing case may be made for, say, A Trip To The Moon). It is also widely considered to be the final important work from the German Expressionists. The influence of Metropolis is still evident today, over sixty years since its release. The video for Madonna's "Express Yourself" incorporates some major roles, themes, and mise-en-scene from the film (Furstenau). But a more obvious and more influential example of a "modern" film taking up the ideas expressed in Metropolis and expanding upon them is Ridley Scott's 1983 picture Blade Runner."
