Paper Summary:
This paper examines and compares Andre Gide's "The Immoralist" and Luce Irigaray's "The Sex Which is Not One." The writer explains that both works may be important to feminism in bringing new topics to the fore. The paper relates that "The Immoralist" is important because it shows that a woman will often take on a role because she feels as if that is the role that she is meant to fill in society. Gide examines how women participate in their own oppression, and also shows that women love in a different way from men and they have different emotions. The paper then relates that Irigaray's book differs from Gide's because it focuses on sexual issues and the effects that they have on a woman's role in society. In "This Sex Which is Not One," the author argues that women are oppressed because of sexual issues that men cannot understand.
From the Paper:
"In Luce Irigaray's study, This Sex Which is Not One, the author examines the sexuality of women and what this means to their role in society. One of the most important things that Irigaray writes about is how she does not believe that Freud was right about a woman's sexuality. Freud wrote that females lacked the sexual desires of males and, therefore, they would never be completely compatible. What Irigaray argues, however, is that a man will never understand a woman's sexuality because they are two completely different things that do not even deserve to be talked about in the same sentence. These two sexualities cannot even be compared because they are so inherently different."
