Paper Summary:
The purpose of this paper is to introduce, discuss, and analyze the books "The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe" by C.S. Lewis and "Dracula" by Bram Stoker. The paper compares and contrasts the two stories that were written over hundreds of years apart, revealing hwo the works show two decidedly different views of horror and fantasy in novels. These two novels indicate some of the social issues of their times, and hold some compelling themes for readers, even today.
From the Paper:
"Lewis' fantasy world is perhaps the greatest indication of the difference between the horror and fantasy genres. He creates a "fantasy" world that is entirely made up and clearly not real. Peter questions the Professor early in the novel, wanting to understand more about Narnia and this alternative world. He says, "'Well, Sir, if things are real, they're there all the time.' 'Are they?' said the Professor; and Peter did not know quite what to say" (Lewis 52). There is no question Narnia, and even how the children reach it, is a fantasy world created to enchant and teach at the same time. On the other hand, "Dracula" attempts to sound real, even if the reader knows the situations cannot be real. Lewis wants his readers to know this is a made-up world, but believe it could exist, while Stoker wants his readers to know this is a real place, and horrors like vampires could exist."
