Cultural Perspectives

Paper Summary:

This paper recounts the new cultural experiences that the author had after emigration to the U.S at the age of 28. Previously from Zambia, the author provides information on how life was back in Zambia. The author tells of the cultural differences between Zambia and the U.S and how the relationship he had with her grandmother, mother and religion helped in adapting to life in the U.S.

From the Paper:

"Prior to emigrating to the United States in 1996 at the age of 28, my Zambian culture of origin had been my only source of cultural learning. Before that, I had never been exposed to any other culture or way of life. In Zambia, women are expected to be completely subservient to their husbands; in many ways, we are expected to obey our husbands like children. Zambian women wear clothes that cover them and come down to their knees."
