↶ Look Inside

Paper Summary:

The paper discusses Joseph Blackburn and John Singleton Copley, two painters whose styles represent the Rococo style of the eighteenth century. The paper notes that both painters illustrate the sophisticated style that is associated with Rococo era. "Isaac Winslow and His Family", by Blackburn, and "Mr. and Mrs. Izard", by Copley, represent a certain sophistication from this era as well as a deep appreciation for realism and each provides a three-dimensional view of their subjects. The paper then notes that, although similar in many ways, the portraits differ in energy and vibrancy. The paper concludes that Blackburn and Copley achieved success because they were aware of the detail that made life real. This compliments their art and, as a result, gives them a special place in artistic history.

From the Paper:

"John Singleton Copley explores individuality with his portrait as seen with Mr. and Mrs. Izard. The 6 by 7.5 foot portrait is oil on canvas portrait featuring the formally dressed couple discussing what is on the piece of paper, which Mr. Izard is holding. Movement in this portrait is similar to that of Isaac Winslow and His Family in that the eye is drawn to the brighter colors first and then guided throughout the other colors in the piece. In addition, the piece reflects the elaborate lifestyle of the elite. Life is large in this portrait and Copley proves it with bright detail and thoughtful expression."
