"Jane Austen's heroine is a headstrong young woman who believes she always knows best, who "had lived nearly twenty-one years in the world with very little to distress or vex her," under the watch of a lax governess and a father more obsessed with his health than raising his daughter (Austen, Chapter 1). Emma must learn to heed the voice of her elders and moral superiors, such as Mr. Knightly. Mark Twain's Huck Finn is in conflict with a civilized society, but unlike Jane Austen's approval for societal constraint on unfettered adolescent rebellion, Huck's society is revealed in Twain's ironic prose to be brutal beneath the surface. Supposedly good, God-fearing people own slaves, even while they correct Huck's table manners. And Asher Lev in Chaim Potok's novel must learn how to balance and then champion his desires to become an artist with the demands of his Hasidic family and community."
