Paper Summary:

This paper compares a number of critical film elements in two of Alfred Hitchcock's early films - 'The Man Who Knew Too Much' (1934) and 'The Lady Vanishes' (1938) - elements that would ultimately become trademarks of the director's popular style of film making.

From the Paper:

"Alfred Hitchcock's early films produced in Britain include 'The Man Who Knew Too Much' and 'The Lady Vanishes'. While these films are considered somewhat inferior to Hitchcock's later masterpieces of suspense they clearly illustrate a number of film elements that would become associated with Hitchcock's personal style. Both of these films feature a number of critical elements that would come to define Hitchcock's personal style including characterization the man in the middle montage set pieces and the build up of tension through camerawork editing and music."
