Acclimating to College Life

This paper compares the vast differences between a military college and a regular college and explains that, because of these differences, a military student would find adjusting to life at a regular college challenging. The paper details the differences between the two types of institutions and offers advice on how to acclimate to life at a regular college.

"The academic world found in the military is extremely different than that found at a typical college. During the military, traditional duties take precedence over schoolwork, but what one does learn is often more important than anything a college class could teach. In the military, one is learning skills that will quite possible be used in real life scenarios, and other classes taken are more like "extra credit." However, at a typical college, the classes are structured to drive you toward a major, and while you may get some hands-on experience, in most cases the information you learn won't save your life or the lives of your classmates someday if you remember it in the field. Therefore, it is easy for college students arriving from the military to push off schoolwork, as it doesn't seem as important as knowledge learned in the military."
