Paper Summary:

Most sexually active women in Germany take the pill, although the same cannot be said for the majority of women in the U.S. America preaches that abstinence is the key, although most know this approach often proves to be unrealistic in today's society. This paper shows that Europeans are more open regarding issues of sexuality when compared with Americans on similar subjects. Topics such as safe sex practices, contraceptive education, and sexual orientation are viewed more liberally across the board. The paper argues that, while it may be difficult to conclude which factors contribute to Germany's lowered abortion statistics, it seems that if all sexually active American women would take the initiative for birth control, the number of abortions could drop significantly.

From the Paper:

"Until society as a whole can agree upon the issue of when life or personhood begins, progress will never be reached. Germany has taken a step forward in pushing proactive sexual education, resulting in knowledgeable women. Many women in the United States are misinformed, and find themselves making one of the biggest decisions of their lives. The answer could lie within sexual education that doesn't preach abstinence as the only way and the right way. Very few teenage boys and girls in America practice abstinence. Once America can take a good look in the mirror and realize norms on sex have changed, then the possibility for a lower abortion rate is within its grasp."
