Paper Summary:

The writer notes that freedom, individualism, liberty, capitalists, and democracy are words that both Tocqueville and Marx believed were important. The writer also points out that from the history of medieval times people have been interested in how to bring about a democracy and have individual freedom at the same time. The writer looks at Tocqueville's view on socialism that begins with the problem that most revolutions begin with the rich being brought down by the poor, that the poor was made better until this recycled into another circle of revolution.

From the Paper:

"Freedom, individualism, liberty, capitalists, and democracy are words that both Tocqueville and Marx believed were important. From the history of medieval times people have been interested in how to bring about a democracy and have individual freedom at the same time. "Socialists differed from liberals in that they saw the French Revolution of 1789 as simply the first step in revamping Europe's order". Marx and Tocqueville lived after the destruction of the Old Regime and wanted something different than absolute monarchy and the aristocratic few having freedom while the working class had nothing. Yet, both of these philosophers knew that individual freedom did not mean that there was political democracy for everyone. Neither of these philosophers wanted the government in total control of everything people did."
