↶ Look Inside

Paper Summary:

The paper offers a look at the positions of both supporters and opponents of the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA). The paper then reveals that NAFTA is both less damaging and less helpful than anticipated by either critics or proponents, given the unexpected surge in strength of the Chinese economy. The paper shows how the economic fallout from NAFTA has been mixed and explains why assessing its relative impact upon the economy is almost impossible.

From the Paper:

"During the 1992 presidential campaign, independent, renegade candidate Ross Perot claimed that NAFTA, the North American Free Trade Agreement, would create a great "sucking sound" of American jobs being transported South across the border (Malkin 2008:1). The persistent anxiety about NAFTA's impact upon the American and also the Mexican economy continues to waft over even contemporary politics, long after the treaty has become law. In the recent Democratic primary campaign, Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton's opposition to her husband's support for NAFTA and Senator Barak Obama's supposedly more credible opposition to the treaty became a heated topic of debate. This was particularly true if working-class areas in manufacturing states such as Pennsylvania and Ohio where voters perceived NAFTA as taking jobs away from American workers (Malkin 2008:1)."
