1,659 words (approx. 6.6 pages) | 10 sources | APA | 2008 United States

Paper Summary:

This paper discusses how stress is a dynamic condition which consists of a unique set of emotional, intellectual and physiological responses to a stimulus and how the human body reacts to threatening and dangerous situations by releasing hormones that sharpen the senses. The paper looks at how emotional stress often can result in harmful health condition such as ulcers, high blood pressure and heart disease. It also examines how in some cases, stress may intensify the progression of a preexisting disease and medical condition.

From the Paper:

"Researchers have shown that in the cases of acute stress, the immune system might respond. But in cases of chronic stress, the immune system, which has to constantly come up with a defense mechanism, might be weakened. It might produce fewer amounts of hormones or antibodies. (NAIAD.gov, 2003) From understanding how the immune system basically works and how stress might come to affect it, one might surmise that social interactions that reduced stress will have a salutary effect on the person, the immune system making a person less susceptible to diseases. Less stress would mean that catecholamine and hormonal levels would be well regulated thus enhancing the immune system."
