President Ramos, together with the GATT's main sponsor in the Senate, then Senator Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo hailed the entry to the WTO as a concrete step in ensuring the place of the Philippines in the roster of emerging tiger economies on the road to being a Newly Industrialized Country in the medium-term."
