"A common theme throughout all of these forced decisions is the fact that they're universally suboptimal for the superpower in question. Despite what leaders of foreign nations may have actually thought, both the Soviets and US were utterly convinced that everyone viewed uprisings across the globe as products of the Cold War bipolarity. It became a lesson in cognitive dissonance for future historians who look back and see that not all foreign governments viewed local struggles in that context. The difference in such mentalities lent itself to some interesting if potentially catastrophic results, such as the near end-of-the-world in Cuba. Cold War politics has shaped the world of today, though hopefully major powers will be more careful in examining foreign politics."
