The Union's vast superiority in manpower and wartime materiel is so well known that it is difficult to conceive of anything except the complete vanquishment of the South by the North that ultimately occurred. Yet, the attack on Ft. Sumter, Virginia, which marked the outbreak of hostilities by the Confederacy on the United States, was obviously a battle loss for the Union..."
