Alcholism and Personality
An analysis of alcohol use among adolescents and the link between its abuse and personality traits.
800 words (approx. 3.2 pages) | 11 sources | APA | 2008 France

Paper Summary:

This paper examines and defines the link between personality traits and the use of alcohol. It also discusses the relationship between the use of alcohol and various cognitive variables, which include expectancies and the reasons behind adolescent drinking. The paper briefly looks at the ways in which personality traits, such as shyness, aggression and/or violence, leads towards alcohol abuse.

From the Paper:

"The use of alcohol is common in Western society, where it is believed that approximately two thirds of 14-17 year-olds uses alcohol (AIHW, 2001). Both shyness and aggression have clearly been identified as personality traits that strongly indicate the possibility of future substance abuse. The associations between the use of alcohol and violence are many, implicating an essential need to more fully understand these, which would include their biological and environmental antecedents. The ways in which personality traits, such as shyness, aggression and/or violence, leads towards alcohol abuse, needs to be addressed further to enable the development of effective strategies to combat the high incidence of heavy drinking among adolescents."
