This paper relates that the 9/11 attacks on the United States made the U.S. aware that measures should be taken to prevent further terrorist activities. The paper then discusses the numerous changes in federal policy that were made after the attacks to ensure that the U.S. would be stronger and more secure when it comes to protecting its homeland. The paper specifically discusses the USA PATRIOT Act and how the US established the Department of Homeland Security in order to coordinate all the efforts of federal law enforcement agencies and other state agencies in eradicating the U.S. of terrorist.

"Federal policies after the 9/11 attacks gave focus on the prevention of terrorists from entering the United States without affecting the economic security which is dependent on the efficient flow of people, goods, and services. Federal policies have ensured that a "smart border" is established that would achieve both the prevention of terrorists from entering and at the same time ensure the efficient flow of commerce. "Smart border" will feature strong and advanced risk-management systems and an effective use of biometric identification information. "
