A discussion on whether Wal-Mart can be considered good for America.
Written in 2006; 1,581 words; 12 sources; APA; $ 51.95
Paper Summary:
This paper discusses how the stampeding juggernaut that is Wal-Mart is once again the focal point of great controversy and how Wal-Mart's path of unprecedented success as a retailer has left a wake of destruction in the United States. It looks at how the first victims of Wal-Mart's insatiable quest for low prices were the small business owners. It also examines how, after conquering all competitors, Wal-Mart has focused on its suppliers and has sought to revolutionize the way retail business is conducted. Wal-Mart now has the leverage to dictate to suppliers what products they want and for what price. The paper also examines how this relentless squeezing of suppliers has decimated business for some and forced many to set up operations in China and how Wal-Mart increased Chinese imports dramatically in the early nineties in an effort to bolster their stock price and has not looked back. The paper concludes that this policy has increased the trade deficit and threatened the United State's position in a global economy.
From the Paper:
" Wal-Mart has proliferated across the United States at the expense of countless small businesses and entrepreneurs. Mike Couturier echoes the sentiments of many mom and pop retailers, "What kills people like me is I can't sell DVDs or CDs because no matter how hard I try, Wal-Mart is up the street beating all my prices (Grimm)." In the face of harsh criticism Wal-Mart has initiated several public relations projects to improve its maligned image. In some cases Wal-Mart has even contributed money and business services such as web design and marketing advice. These cases are merely a knee jerk reaction by Wal-Mart to clean up its public image. The effort has had mixed results, "a recent survey published in Advertising Age, found Wal-Mart ranking in the top three of the most and least trusted American corporations (Dicker, Globe)." "
