"VeriFone

History
VeriFone was founded by William Melton in 1981. Melton was a psychology and Chinese philosophy major in college. He spent some time wandering around Asia during the 1960s before settling in Hawaii in 1971. He started a company at that time that wrote software for real estate agencies, an early entrant into the computer business before the PC revolution which started in the 1970s and changed the nature of the business. Melton sold his original company in 1980 for $3 million, and he used this money as a stake to found VeriFone to provide local retailers with access to the names of writers of bad checks over the phone, and hence the name.
