760 words (approx. 3 pages) | 2 sources | APA | 2009

Paper Summary:

This paper reviews the New York City Police Department (NYPD) as an example of the use of organizational culture and transformational leadership to achieve the overall goals of the department. The paper explains that, in a transformational leadership environment, the role of a leader is to motivate and inspire a common vision and goals amongst subordinates. The paper stresses that leaders have to realize that they set the overall tone for the employees.

From the Paper:

"This attitude changed the organizational culture within the agency. Most police officers thought that this type of enforcement left no time to combat major crime. Bratton, as the NYPD's top-cop, created at first a negative organizational climate. He, in essence, transformed the agency to what it is today and in the end there was mixed feelings. Although he had opposition, Bratton's theory made cops and bosses work harder all while reducing overall crime in the city."
