From the Paper:

"Group incentives, which are preferred by some leaders, can be offered through gain sharing or profit sharing. Gain sharing consists of incentives offered based on the performance of employees not profits of the company. However, profit sharing is dependent on the success of the company. Profit sharing is not dependent on employee performance; therefore, this practice may not serve as a successful motivational tool (Dreher and Dougherty, 2001).
"Charles Lacy, Vice President of Sales and Marketing, has indicated his preference for offering group incentives based on team performance rather than individual performance. Although other departments have expressed concern regarding this practice, Lacy maintains this practice would be most beneficial for Riordan (University of Phoenix, 2007). Similar to other suggested methods of motivation, not all leaders are in agreement."
