"Pain assessment and effective treatment is paramount in clinical nursing care. Cancer patients and post-surgical patients often require the administration of opioids with which to control pain. Opioid use carries its own inherent risks and concerns both to the healthcare practitioner and to the patient. This paper presents a high level discussion of pain assessment techniques and tools, especially for the nurse; compares and contrasts the use of percocet vs. oral morphine, appropriate dosing, adjunctive medications and other therapies to administer, etc. and then discusses and differentiates between dependence, tolerance and addiction. The paper concludes on why and how these issues are relevant to nursing. Case presentation The patient is 59 year old female diagnosed with terminal ovarian cancer with a history which includes having had a total hysterectomy.
