This paper begins with a detailed description of an encounter between a man and woman. It continues to use sociologist Erving Goffman's literature on communication to dissect the interpersonal interaction. It explains the information relayed by the unintended or non-verbal language between the two people.

"Through impression management, the man in the courtroom was trying to convince the audience that the woman had stalked him. He was trying to construct believability for his testimony and the fact that he was testifying against the woman was a non-verbal signal for the audience that he was honest. The woman had committed adultery with the man in the past and he was now trying to present an idealized version of the front, to convince the audience that she did more wrong. He felt that his love for the woman was abnormal and thus, he hid it in a process of mystification. Possibly to please his jealous wife, he tried to make prominent in the courtroom only those characteristics that were socially sanctioned, legitimating both his social role and the framework to which the role belonged, by saying that the woman had started the sexual relationship and he had been a victim."
