Tiep (1997) reports that between 14 - 20 million individuals suffer from COPD and the number of new diagnoses is rising at alarming rates with an associated annual cost upwards of $40 billion. COPD is regarded as the fourth leading cause of death in the United States (Simmons & Simmons, 2004; Tiep, 1997)."
