From the Paper:

"Amgen has a commitment to maintain shareholder value. Although their ultimate commitment is to the patients that they serve, there is still an obligation to preserve and grow value for the investor. In order to overcome these challenges, Amgen must focus on new product lines to spread the risk over a number of product lines. They must also work to eliminate the potential for any further actions against them, as far as safety is concerned. There is not much that they can do to prevent the possibility the other companies will attempt to develop similar products to theirs. It is inevitable in this type of business environment. However, they already have an excellent staff of legal professionals that is dedicated to defending them against these threats."
