Such an approach allows a company to "ride out" market vicissitudes in one sector while benefiting from stability or even steady growth in another. Were IBM to enter the telecommunications sector, the company would face certain unavoidable obstacles - but these obstacles would not, by any means, be insurmountable. The following paper will therefore briefly outline an entry strategy which would allow IBM to take advantage of its strengths while successfully penetrating a lucrative market. Not least of all, the paper argues that the company must "know its enemy", know its "friends" and - not least of all - know itself if success is to be found.
