Paper Summary:
This paper discusses the book "Your Work Matters to God," by Doug Sherman and William Hendricks, and contends that it effectively addresses the issues that arise from the conflict between how Christians view work and how God Himself actually views work. The writer discusses the main sections and ideas of the book and explains why they are meaningful to him and how they have affected him in his personal life and career. The writer explains that more than being a statement of God's views on work, this book accurately describes God's relationship to the marketplace.
From the Paper:
"In the first section, "How Christians View Work", the authors examine the sometimes indistinguishable differences between Christians and the secular world in their attitudes toward work. The idea that was most striking in my own mind was Sherman and Hendricks' dealings with the fallacy that work exists solely as a result of the fall of man, and is therefore inherently evil. I have probably spent most of my life mired in this misconceived notion, because I never actually thought the concept through. I have always been taught that paradise involved all of the positive elements that one could think of, and that work only came after Adam and Eve sinned. This concept was expressed very well in the book by what the authors called God's gift of work. (Sherman & Hendricks, 1987, 83). They contend that work is actually a function of God's grace. God has honored His creation by making us co-workers with Him. God created the garden, and he created Adam to work it (Gen 2:15). God said his work was good (Gen 2:2-3). Thus, God himself is a worker."
