Sula Peace and Nel Wright are the two heroines and friends about whom much of the plot pivots. At the same time the plot explores the themes of African American city life, history, and changes throughout a vast portion of the twentieth century. First discussing the period immediately after World War I and culminating in 1965, the reader is treated to an in-depth view of Sula and Nel at various crucial points in their development and their adulthood.
