This paper tells the story of "Tom Jones" - a novel written by Henry Fielding and published in 1749 and explains that many aspects of the author's own life are apparent within it. The author of this paper also likens the novel to a modern day soap opera because of the behavior of the various characters.
From the Paper:
"This novel begins as a man named Allworthy returns to his home in the town of Somersetshire from a trip to London. Allworthy lives with his sister, Bridget. When he arrives at home, he finds a baby boy in his bed. This discovery causes Allworthy to go out and find the parents of this child. It is discovered that the parents are a woman named Jenny Jones and her tutor, Mr. Partridge. Upon discovering this, Allworthy bans Jenny from the city and, soon after this, Allworthy leaves the city as well. Since this boy, whose name is Tom Jones, is now homeless, Allworthy decides to raise him as his own, despite the fact that the Church does not agree with this gesture. Soon after this, Bridget married a man named Captain Blifil. Blifil and Bridget soon have a child together, but Blifil secretly despises Tom because he will inherit part of the family's vast wealth. This does not matter for long, however, as Captain Blifil dies around this time."
