The True Los Angeles
A review of the book "City of Quartz: Excavating the Future in Los Angeles" by Mike Davis.
922 words (approx. 3.7 pages) | 0 sources | 2009

Paper Summary:

The paper explains Mike Davis' belief, as expressed in his book "City of Quartz: Excavating the Future in Los Angeles", suggests that beneath the shiny exterior, Los Angeles is fettered by the same economic, political and social turmoil that infests nearly every American city. The paper goes through the chapters of Davis' book and emphasizes Davis' belief that the escalating civil conflicts within L.A. are only a small representation of what we will soon see on a national level. The paper asserts that while Davis' writing is both strongly opinionated and overly pessimistic, it is not without merit. The paper recommends it to adults and students interested in the urban geography, sociology or contemporary affairs.

From the Paper:

"As a self proclaimed native Californian Mike Davis writes with ease about the area so familiar to him and we sometimes get lost in his region specific details. His effusive writing can be overwhelming at times and would benefit greatly if it was, at least on occasion, more succinct. These flaws are not unforgivable though and we must take into account that City of Quartz: Excavating the Future in Los Angeles was first and foremost planned as an academic thesis and not a beach blanket reading companion."
