1,333 words (approx. 5.3 pages) | 1 source | APA | 2008 United States

Paper Summary:

This paper outlines the theme of love and other significant, reoccurring symbols and ideas in Michael Cunningham's novel "The Hours". As this book draws heavily on Virginia Woolf's novel "Mrs. Dalloway", the paper addresses many of the themes in this book as well.

From the Paper:

"Though The Hours is a story of three women in different settings and times, Michael Cunningham intertwines their stories and brings them together to achieve a sense of universality. While he places his characters in similar situations and portrays them all as symbols of traditionally oppressed groups, he also uses the theme of love as a universal equalizer for all of his them. Each story examines the theme of love in the lives of people and investigates its effect on different individuals. The Hours explores the varying types of love between people, portraying it as a universal equalizer for the traditionally oppressed groups of women, homosexuals, and the mentally ill."
