This paper briefly summarizes Edgar Allan Poe's work "The Tell-Tale Heart". The paper outlines the plot and focuses on the narrator's plan to murder the victim and then hide the body. The writer maintains that Poe's story is a classic piece of literature and that, in it, Poe does an excellent job of describing the fine line between sanity and insanity.

"On the eighth night he is even more cautious than usual and indeed even time seems to pass slowly, such is the pace at which he operates. He opens the door to his victim's room and gently pushes his head into the opening but as he is about to open the lantern his thumb slips upon the fastening and the old man awakens. A groan is heard from the old man. The narrator translates this as a sign of terror and awe. He claims to know these feelings well as he himself had felt them many times during the dark hours. The narrator talks about the victim feeling death approaching him. He opens the lantern and a single ray of light falls upon the vulture eye. This infuriates him and he starts to hear the heart of the old man thumping like a drum that stimulates a soldier's courage. The heart beat grows louder until he thinks it would surely be heard by someone. "
