"The Joy Luck Club"
A brief review of Amy Tan's novel "The Joy Luck Club".
813 words (approx. 3.3 pages) | 1 source | MLA | 2009

Paper Summary:

This paper discusses how "The Joy Luck Club", a novel written by Amy Tan, shows how Chinese immigrant mothers and their American-raised daughters reach crises in their relationships and overcome their difficulties. It looks at how the environmental and cultural differences from immigration cause their misunderstandings and negligence of each other and how Amy Tan shows that, by resolving their conflicts and misunderstandings, mothers and daughters can develop their relationships.

From the Paper:

"In the story, disagreements strengthen the bond between mother and daughter. After An-mei reprimands Rose for not standing up for herself, Rose becomes stronger and feels even friendly towards her mother. Rose seems like a traditional Chinese woman who has always been taught to listen to her mother. However, when she has a problem with her husband, Ted, she starts talking and listening to her psychiatrist, not her mother. At the funeral of one of the church members, Rose tells her mother about her divorce, and her mother is convinced that Ted has been doing "monkey business" (209). With furious feeling that her daughter has been "hulrihudu" (210), An-mei begs her daughter to stand up for herself. When Ted calls Rose to press her to sign the divorce paper, Rose tells Ted to come over and take the paper. "
